The film's director, Michael Ritchie, being aware of the heart condition and recent bypass surgery of co-star Walter Matthau, when on the filming location in South Lake Tahoe in California, decreased his working week from six days to a standard five day week, as this reduced the risk of cardiovascular problems, which could occur due to the high altitudes which have lower levels of available oxygen.
