In The Little Mermaid (1989), Ursula's original color schemes are black and purple, similar to Maleficent's. In this movie, Uma's color scheme is changed to turquoise to differentiate her with Mal's. Costume designer Kara Saun was inspired by Ursula's eyeshadow when designing Uma's outfits.
