The film was drastically re-edited before its release because of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association Of America) rating board's strict guidelines on graphic violence, language and nudity at that point in time. Edits are most noticeable during the film's many jump cuts, specifically the attacks on the strippers by the unnamed killer. Ultimately, it caused Twentieth Century-Fox to sell the film to an independent distributor for a theatrical release.
