The super-battleship in the film, the Yamato, never took part in the fight for Guadalcanal. Instead, she spent the entire Guadalcanal campaign at anchor at Truk in the Caroline Islands. The Japanese did commit four battleships to the Guadalcanal campaign: Kongo, Hiei, Kirishima, and Haruna, all sister ships that were originally built in 1913-15 as battle cruisers, Kongo being the last Japanese capital ship constructed outside of Japan (she was built in Britain). Kongo and Haruna survived the campaign undamaged, while Hiei and Kirishima were both sunk within two days of each other in fierce night battles in mid-November 1942.
