When the film begins, Pistone is already undercover as Donnie Brasco. In real life, he had actually been attempting to infiltrate the Columbo Family but wasn't having any success. Unlike the early scene in the movie where he first meets Lefty who wants some jewelry appraised, Donnie actually met Lefty and other Bonnano Family associates through mutual contacts and was invited by Lefty to join the Bonnanos.
