The movie almost folded before production had begun. Initially, Smart Egg Productions was supposed to put $1 million into the movie, but it dropped out several days before filming began, and Robert Shaye, who had put in a lot of his own money, had to try to raise money elsewhere. Two weeks into shooting, the production had no money left, so the crew was asked to work one week without pay, after which line producer John H. Burrows used his own credit card to pay those who had stayed. Director Wes Craven missed the first table reading because his agent had advised him not to come, due to the financial insecurity. Eventually, Shaye brokered a deal with Media Home Entertainment, and subsequently persuaded Smart Egg to put up the final $200,000 needed to complete the film.
