The character of Tugboat Annie was based on Thea Foss, a Norwegian immigrant housewife who founded the Foss Maritime Co. in Tacoma, WA, in 1889. The film's premiere was held at the Roxy Theater in Tacoma on October 18, 1940. The stars of the movie were in attendance, as were Thea Foss' sons Arthur, Wedell and Henry, who were executives of the Foss Maritime Co.
