When Dillinger returned to Chicago in the summer of 1934 he found a job as a clerk. He had assumed the identity of Jimmy Lawrence, a petty criminal from Wisconsin, to whom he bore a physical resemblance. At the time the population of Chicago was about a third of a million people and he believed that in a city of that size he could vanish into the crowd and, at least for a while, live a somewhat normal existence.
