Although it is never mentioned openly in the movie, Kyra Collins is killed by "Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy". Also called Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA for short), it is a mental disorder and a form of child abuse. Looking for attention, the parent or caretaker of a child (most often times mother), fake or causes real symptoms in the victim to make it appear that the child has a true physical or mental health issue. It is revealed (at around 1h 25 mins) in the videotape that Cole gives Kyra's father, when by chance it was recorded as her mother poisoned her food for keeping her sick. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy was first diagnosed in 1977 by British pediatrician Roy Meadow (although the original Munchausen Syndrome was first diagnosed in 1951 by Richard Alan John Asher). Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy has been a popular plot twist on many TV shows, including X-Files (1993), E.R. - Medici in prima linea (1994), Body of Proof (2011), The Practice - Professione avvocati (1997), Dr. House - Medical Division (2004), Law & Order - I due volti della giustizia (1990), Law & Order: Unità Speciale (1999), Criminal Minds (2005), JAG - Avvocati in divisa (1995), Elementary (2012), and Supernatural (2005); in the novels It and Misery (both by Stephen King), The Body Farm by Patricia Cornwell, and in both the novel Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn as its miniseries adaptation Sharp Objects (2018).
