The title role was originally written for Dana Carvey. He came on board back in 1990 when the film was at Universal/Imagine. He then backed out of the movie at the last minute. It was green lit, ready to go and they were going to pay Carvey a fortune. But when his previous film, Opportunity Knocks (1990), flopped, he "didn't want to make the same mistake twice". He held off on movie-making for awhile until Wayne's World (1992).
