Filming started in 1929 when 'talkies' were over but Chaplin was determined to continue making silents and to continue rehearsing on film. the 20 year old Virginia Cherrill, who was chosen for the lead, despite having never acted before, worked with no script and acted out the parts of all the other actors. September 15th 1930 was the 534th day of working on the film although actual filming had only been done for 166 days. This was due to Sir Charles Chaplin firing one actor causing him to re-shoot scenes and he had to over come problems of Virginia's inexperience. that and Chaplin's obsession with perfectionism took filming into a second year.
