Michael Arndt worked on the screenplay for 8 months but said he needed 18 more to really get it into coherent shape. Disney felt that this was far too long so J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over scriptwriting duties. In an interview, franchise creator George Lucas complained about the film being heavily derivative of his own original Star Wars. Thus he didn't like the shortcuts taken by Abrams, Kasdan, and Disney.
