A preview screening held in Monterey, California produced rave reviews for up-and-coming star Joan Crawford. Crawford's reception was so positive that Irving Thalberg feared her performance would outshine Greta Garbo's. Thalberg carefully supervised the editing process to ensure a balance of footage between all of the film's stars.
