In the late 1980s the Disney corporation had changed their mind about resisting the temptation to release their animation back catalog onto home video and decided to make this one of their first efforts to test the market. In 1989 this film was given a final theatrical re-release before being released onto VHS a few months later where it sold well, paving the way for the rest of the classic Disney animation to follow in the next few years.
