Despite Jacob Tremblay's talent and commitment to the character, filming still had its challenges, the most significant being that he was only allowed to work nine hours maximum per day. Given these time constraints, Arjen Tuiten knew from the start that his makeup design would need to be applied in half the time it usually takes for a transformation of this complexity. Tuiten and his team overcame those challenges using a few creative ideas and were able to get the application time down to 75 minutes. "Michael Nickiforek, a Vancouver makeup artist, helped me apply the makeup," said Tuiten. "And we were always trying to make it as comfortable as we could for Jacob." To keep things fun, he added, "When the makeup came off every day, we'd run around, play little pranks and jokes."
