One of the inspirations for this film was obviously Scarpette rosse (1948). Not only do both films tell of a ballerina getting so into a part that the plot of the ballet comes to life, as well as both leading actresses dying at the end, but both feature the ballerina engaging in a pas de deux with her love interest - who also choreographed for the film. Robert Helpmann appeared in "The Red Shoes" and choreographed as well. And Benjamin Millepied also did the same for "Black Swan".
