Both James Cameron and William Wisher realized early on that they wouldn't be able to keep it a secret that Arnold Schwarzenegger was playing a good guy in the film. Nevertheless, they wrote the first part of the film so the audience wouldn't know, leaving ambiguity in Schwarzenegger and Patrick's characters until it's finally revealed about 30 minutes in.
