In the original novel, the school which Billy transferred to was called The Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy and it was located in Florida. In the film, the name of the school was changed to Ulysses S. Grant Academy, and the state is unclear, except it is referred to as being in a "red state." Later in the film there is an oblique reference to Virginia cooking, but it is not clear that the setting of the film is in Virginia, or anywhere in the south, just that it is in a "red state." Both Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ulysses S. Grant had attended the United States Military Academy at West Point (New York), both became commanders-in-chief of war time US Army military theater commands and occupying forces which accepted surrender of opposing military forces, and both later became post war US Army Chief's of Staff and then subsequently both became two term Presidents of the United States who followed Presidents who had succeeded from Vice-Presidencies (Andrew Johnson and Harry S. Truman) to Presidencies after the deaths of wartime President's (Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt) in office.
