Tarot cards were originally used in playing card games, only later to be adapted for divination. In early card games each set had one or two "The Fool" card(s) which would act as a trump card resulting in immediate victory, or canceling out another player using one. This is somewhat appropriate considering the "Fool" was the only survivor.
