Wes Craven deliberately sent the MPAA a more violent version of the film for approval, expecting them to insist on trimming scenes and toning down the gore, meaning he would be able to make minor tweaks to get the movie through. To his surprise, the MPAA passed the film with an R rating as they understood the nuances of what the film was saying about movie violence.
