The three American officers that arrive on the C-141 aircraft and greet the POWs near the end of the movie, were all three Vietnam War POWs, shot down over North Vietnam. The officer who speaks to the 'Williamson' character, is Col. Leo K. Thorsness, USAF, (Ret), who spent 6 years as a POW and is a Medal of Honor recipient. The other two officers are Col. Kenneth Hughey, USAF, (Ret), 6 years as a POW; and Capt. Rod Knutson, USN, (Ret). Knutson was a POW for 7½ years.
