Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the film's director, used Futaro Yamada's novel, Makai Tensho, as a main source of inspiration for Ninja Scroll. Ironically, 4 years later, Makai Tensho would receive an anime adaptation, which, when released in the west, was renamed to Ninja Resurrection by the distributors, ADV Films, in an attempt to capitalize off of Ninja Scroll.
