Peter Jackson is going for a magical realism approach here, like one that employed with Pan's Labyrinth, or 100 Years of Solitude; where you have heartbreaking moments of realism punctuated by the spiritual and supernatural; which is supposed to give the already loaded subject matter extra power and resonance.
