(at around 1h 19 mins) Bill Murray's overly familiar hug of Ned and his reaction was impromptu. Murray told Stephen Tobolowsky ahead of time that he was going to wing it. Tobolowsky was taken completely by surprise and followed through while remaining brilliantly in character. It might be noted that he nailed the audition in one shot, preparing the night before and then, with no one in the room but Harold Ramis and the casting director, he let fly with the most over-the-top performance of a dweeb that he could manage, leaving them rolling on the floor.
