The film is positioned as a sequel of sorts to the television series "Friendship is Magic", but the events of the series are treated as ancient legends by the film's characters and the series' characters are implied to be long gone by the film's era. However the film includes cameos of artifacts which belonged to characters from the series, and there is an image of the sorcerer Star Swirl the Bearded (one of the series' supporting characters) in the film.
