Many viewers question the realism of what happens in the last battle in the film. But what happens is almost exactly what happened on 26 January 1945 in Holtzwihr, France, except that the vehicle was an M10 tank destroyer (a less heavily armored vehicle based on the M4 Sherman, rather than an actual Sherman), the vehicle was on fire, and it wasn't the vehicle's crew but a single US Army Infantry officer named Second Lieutenant Audie Murphy who held off the German attack with his rifle and the vehicle's .50 caliber machine gun. Murphy survived the battle, was awarded the Medal of Honor for this action and, with the help of actor James Cagney, became an actor after the war. Murphy portrayed himself in All'inferno e ritorno (1955), the film version of his autobiography, which climaxes with this action. Much as the crew of Fury have been deeply affected by what they have seen during the war, Murphy suffered from PTSD.
