In the climax, the ice pick is seen underneath Nick's bed with Catherine possibly reaching for it, implicating her as the killer and framer of Beth. This is merely a theory: Gus worked out that Beth was Catherine's roommate and arranged for her to meet him at the office building. Somehow, Catherine may have had Gus or Beth's phone tapped, overheard his message to Beth and put her plan to kill Gus and frame Beth into motion. Donning a hoodie, Catherine made her way to the office building building. Knowing Nick would go to there, she killed Gus and broke into Beth's apartment to plant evidence. In the time between Gus' murder and Nick returning home, Catherine broke into Nick's apartment and put the ice pick under his bed and waited for him to arrive.
