In the film, the supposed witch Elly Kedward was killed in a witch hunt, and her vengeful ghost seeks revenge. The screenwriters reportedly took inspiration from the Salem witch trials (February 1692-May 1693) and from the fictionalized depiction of the trials in the play "The Crucible" (1953) by Arthur Miller.
