In the "25 Greatest Movies of the decade 2010-2020" round-table discussion with Anupama Chopra, director Kashyap revealed how the movie came to be. Kashyap had envisioned a series of "Bombay" period movies following Bombay Velvet (2015). However, Bombay Velvet opened to a dismal opening weekend at the box-office and it was clear that the movie will be a commercial loss. Kashyap went to his producer Madhu Mantena on the Monday following the Friday release of Bombay Velvet to discuss how much money he can now raise to make his next project (then tentatively titled 'Raman Raghav'). Now working with a smaller budget, Kashyap then went to his Line Producer to calculate how many days worth of shooting budget he had - which was approximately 20 days. Kashyap then re-wrote the script so it could be shot within budget in approximately 20 days. This retooling of the movie script was the genesis of the title 'Raman Raghav 2.0'
