When it came out, M*A*S*H (1970) was a critical darling; and it even won the Oscar for best screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr.. But the New York Times did not like the movie. Times critic Roger Greenspun said the following "Although it is impudent, bold, and often very funny, it lacks the sense of order (even in the midst of disorder) that seems the special province of successful comedy."
