Craig T. Nelson was offered the role of Lieutenant McMahon, but he was busy filming Coach (1989) and could not get out of his commitment to the series to film a movie. Joe Morton was cast in the role on a recommendation to Fox by James Cameron who previously directed him in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) as Cameron was directing another summer action film for the studio at the same time which was True Lies (1994). Nelson, however did go on to work with two of the main stars of Speed. He worked with Keanu Reeves in The Devil's Advocate (1997) released the same year that Coach went off the air and later worked with Sandra Bullock in The Proposal (2009).
