Augmenting its colorful collection of American character actors, the film introduced a fresh face to English-speaking audiences, Paris-based Algerian actor Idir Chender, who played the adult Karim. "Idir astounded me when he came in to audition for the role," producer Monica Levinson said. "I think he really felt the emotions of what this character would have gone through and the challenges he faces in life while having to maintain his position as the top man of this terrorist cell."
