There is a parallel between Thanos and Tony Stark, in that they both are aware of something from an early point and constantly have to deal with being smarter than others. Thanos is a futurist as much as Tony Stark, which is why he is aware of who Stark is from the original battle in New York City, as the person who undid the plan.
