Screenwriter Robert Bolt hoped to retain many of the political and historical aspects of the story, but director David Lean mostly omitted them, causing heavily adverse critical comment. Lean, who felt that many intellectual critics had a prejudice against him, only returned to film-making twice more, with "Ryan's Daughter" (1970) and "A Passage to India" (1984). While "Dr. Zhivago" had many scenes set in a Russian Winter, it was actually filmed in temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
