During the scene where the Medevac officer confronts Kinnear's Bruce Crandall, Ed "Too Tall" Freeman breaks up the fight and the Engineering Corps "castle" insignia is visible on his uniform collar. This is accurate because despite being a pilot, Freeman was technically an Engineering officer. The Army did not see Aviation as an independent specialty until 1983 and sourced its pilots from volunteer officers effectively 'on loan' from their controlling career branch (i.e. Armor, Infantry, Artillery, Quartermaster, etc). Pilots could, upon request or if ordered, return to their career branch for non-flying job assignments. During Vietnam the number of pilots required also led to the re-vitalization of Warrant Officer ranks, officers whose purpose was to fly without the Army needing to worry about their career progression in the traditional army branches.
