Staff Sergeant. Nantz, at the rank of E-6, is still a Jr. non-commissioned officer. With combat deployments and a clean record, a Marine should make E-6 in 6-8 years. Normally, with 20 years of honorable service and battlefield decorations, a Marine in the infantry field should reach the rank of at least E-7- Gunnery Sergeant in charge of a Platoon or Company and more likely, E-8 which is a Master Sergeant in a skilled position or a First Sergeant, which would be the Senior enlisted man in a Company or a Battalion numbering 500 people. Someone who is still an E-6 after 20 years of service has very likely been in considerable trouble and faced repeated non-judicial punishment or multiple Article 15 charges, the equivalent of light misconduct.
