Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez and John Wayne had an interesting connection. Gonzales, who was extremely poor at the time and functionally illiterate, had been a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, You Bet Your Life (1950). Wayne happened to be watching the show. Gonzales' nervous fumbling and the unwittingly hilarious things that he was saying struck Wayne as being so funny that he contacted the show, obtained Gonzale's contact information and offered him a part in a movie. From that point Gonzales would be seen as a regular member of John Wayne's standard troupe of actors. Beyond transforming Gonzales' life, it affected his family too.
