Kevin Kwan originally wrote the novel as a short story adaptation of a poem he wrote for a creative writing course titled "Singapore Bible Study" as a way of preserving memories of life in Singapore during the 18-month period (October 2008 to April 2010) he was caring for his dying father. After completing the chapter, he was inspired to turn it into a novel. The short story was eventually featured as chapter two of the book.
