Becca, who is based on Masami from Ringu (1998), is featured in a subplot where she's institutionalized after watching Samara kill Katie and now has a phobia of TVs. This is based on a similar subplot that was in Ringu 2 (1999), as Masami is no longer in the original film after Tomoko (Katie's Japanese counterpart) is killed in the opening scene.
