When Rip is in his Gulf City hotel room, he imitates a southern accent to complain to the operator that his radio is all commercials and "Apple Pan Dowdy". He is referring to the popular song "Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy" which was a big hit in 1946 in two separate versions, one sung by Dinah Shore and the other sung by June Christy with Stan Kenton and His Orchestra.
