While the conceit of the mask was part of Kevin Williamson's script, he made no mention of what else the killer is wearing. Wes Craven and the costume department went through various options, all designed to ensure viewers couldn't identify the killer behind the mask. They initially looked at white costumes to be in line with the ghost mask, but one of the producers suggested they go black instead.
