Both main characters, Jake and Packard, were played by sons of very famous actors trying to make names for themselves at the time. Jake was played by Charlie Sheen, son of Martin Sheen, and Packard was played by Nick Cassavetes, son of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands. Likewise, Clint Howard (Rughead) and Randy Quaid (Loomis) were both struggling to maintain their names in Hollywood in the shadows of then more-famous brothers Ron Howard and Dennis Quaid.
