The original idea for the film was inspired by real-life to a degree, said Tony Gardner. Dave Grohl "had been recording in a mansion out in Encino where he had actually stayed when he had his house renovated. And then when they were doing their 10th album he rented it out and they recorded there. It's this big, weird, creepy old house." Gardner continued, "They kept saying, 'What if this place was haunted?' and started making up stories."
