Early in the movie, Melvin Purvis shoots and kills Pretty Boy Floyd. The remainder of the movie focuses on Purvis being named the agent in charge of hunting down John Dillinger. However, John Dillinger was killed by federal agents 3 months before Pretty Boy Floyd was killed by Purvis. The FBI named Pretty Boy Floyd "Public Enemy No. 1" on July 23, 1934, after the death of John Dillinger, which occurred on July 22, 1934. Local police and FBI agents, led by Melvin Purvis, shot Floyd on October 22, 1934 in a corn field in East Liverpool, Ohio.
