Derek McKinnon, who played the killer Kenny, later became embroiled with an actual murderer. He was a neighbor and acquaintance of Luka Magnotta, a one-time porn actor who was convicted of the 2012 slaying of a Chinese college student, whose remains he dismembered and mailed to several local schools. In an interview from after Magnotta's arrest, MacKinnon speculated that he may have been inspired by his character in Terror Train.
