Ang Lee was in negotiations to direct the film but a deal could not be reached. Lee was also offered Terminator 3 - Le macchine ribelli (2003), but he chose to do Hulk (2003) instead. Other directors considered to helm the film included Rian Johnson and Denis Villeneuve.
