In L. A. Confidential, Russell Crowe plays Bud White, who works as dumb muscle in the 1950s, is very protective of women, and is contrasted to Kim Basinger's intelligence. Jackson Healy here could hypothetically be Bud White twenty years later. Russell Crowe is about twenty years older, and Nice Guys is set in Los Angeles about twenty years after L. A. Confidential. His character still works as a brute, is still very protective of women, and is still concerned about not being the smartest person, and is also coincidentally contrasted to Kim Basinger. (It's unlikely this coincidence was wasted on Crowe; he has long said that he wished Bud White could get a sequel.)
