At one point Nick Castle was offered to direct. But when producer Gary Foster sought Nora Ephron to re-write some of the screenplay, Castle disagreed with her approach. Ephron wanted the film to be a romantic comedy with some edge in it, whereas Castle wanted more sweetness and sentimentality. Castle left the film due to creative differences and went on to direct Dennis the Menace (1993) instead, which coincidentally happened to open in theaters domestically the very same day this film did on June 25, 1993.
