One of the themes of the film is struggling actors trying to break through into Hollywood. The real Mulholland Drive cuts across LA, forming a boundary between the poorer Sam Fernando Valley to the north, and Hollywood to the south. Thus, it serves as a metaphor for the boundary between failure and success in the movie business.
