The old camera on the gym floor throughout the National Bandstand scenes was actually "functional"... The prop camera (designed to look like an RCA TK11) had a real modern-day camera placed inside of it. The controls for the modern camera were also in their proper place: The focus control was attached to the side of the camera and the zoom control was attached to the pan handle... The same places these controls would have been on the late 40's/early 50's-era camera it was modeled after.
